The Book

Just Another Trip

Just Another Trip is a novel set between August and December 1943, when the bomber war is escalating and losses are mounting. The seven-man crew of Lancaster M-Mother have been together for nearly five months and already have lost a navigator, seriously injured, and a rear gunner killed. It is a dangerous war. Matt White and his crew are halfway through their operational tour as M-Mother climbs away on their fifteenth trip, this time to bomb Nuremberg. The crew comes from disparate backgrounds, but the danger of flying repeated operations over Germany, their interdependence on each other, and the off-duty time together has drawn them into a close-knit team. The periods between trips, vital for the morale of the crew, bring some normality into their otherwise appallingly dangerous young lives. The stark distinction between the raw brutality of the operations and the relative tranquility of the intervals in between is a unique feature of the bomber war, but as the story unfolds, the pace of battle intensifies, and with friends and other personnel failing to return, the effect on the crew is devastating.
